Osei Tutu II, originally named Nana Barima Kwaku Duah and born on May 6, 1950, ascended to the position of the 16th Asantehene on April 26, 1999. In terms of nomenclature, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II directly follows the lineage of the Ashanti Empire's founder from the 17th century, Otumfuo Osei Tutu I.

At the age of about five, Otumfuo moved into the royal household of his uncle, Oheneba Mensah Bonsu, the Hiahene, for early preparation for his future role.

Otumfuo attended Sefwi Wiaso Secondary School in 1964 and successfully completed 'O' Level under the guidance of Nana Kwadwo Aduhene II. Subsequently, he pursued his education at Osei Kyeretwie Secondary School (OKESS) before delving into accountancy studies at the Institute of Professional Studies, now known as the University of Professional Studies, in Accra. Later, he furthered his education at the Polytechnic of North London, where he earned a Diploma in Management and Administration in 1985.

Otumfuo held the role of a senior consultant at Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company in Toronto, Canada, from 1981 to 1985. Following this, he served as a Personnel Officer at the HPCC Stonebridge Bus Garage Project in London in 1985. Upon returning to Ghana in 1989, he founded Primoda Financial Services Limited in London and established Transpomech International (Ghana) Limited.

President John Agyekum Kufuor appointed Otumfuo to lead the Committee of Eminent Chiefs tasked with resolving the chieftaincy crisis in Dagbon in 2002. In November 2018, Otumfuo presented recommendations that played a pivotal role in restoring peace to the Dagbon region.
