George Darko

George Darko, born on January 12, 1951, in Akropong, Ghana, was a celebrated Ghanaian burger-highlife musician, guitarist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter. With a career spanning from the late 1960s, Darko left an indelible mark on the music scene with his infectious rhythms and captivating melodies

Early Music Career

In the 1960s, George Darko began his music career, playing for an army band entertaining troops in the Middle East.

He moved to Germany with the Golden Stool Band in the late 1970s.

Rise to fame

In 1983, George Darko released his first hit "Ako Te Brofo" and the album "Friends", marking the beginning of his burger-highlife legacy. He also released the "Highlife Time" album.

He released the  "Moni Palava" album in 1986

George Darko released the "Soronko" album and returned to Akropong. 

Leadership and Recognition

In 1991, George Darko was made the Tufuhene of Akropong-Akuapim with the stool name Nana Yaw Ampem Darko I. 3 years later in 1994, he released the "Highlife in the Air" album.

 

Later Career and Life

George Darko released the "Come to Africa" album in 2006. In January 2010, he demanded and received apologies from a newspaper regarding sex allegations.

George Darko was awarded the VGMA Lifetime Award for his outstanding contribution to highlife music at the 21st edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Death

On 20th March 2024, George Darko sadly passed away at the age of 73.
