Began Our Journey as Tennessee’s First Multi-Specialty Clinic

On September 23, 1949, we began construction on our facility, establishing the first multi-specialty group practice in Tennessee. Our clinic was the vision of Dr. Leland Johnston, who partnered with Drs. Paul E. Wylie, Henry H. Herron, John Hughes Chandler, and Baker Hubbard to bring it to life.

A New Era of Healthcare Begins

In 1950, we officially opened our doors for the first time, marking a major milestone in modern healthcare for West Tennessee. Designed by Ellerbe and Company, the same firm behind the Mayo Clinic, the $300,000 facility was equipped with 22 exam rooms, its own lab, a pediatrics section, an emergency room, a pharmacy, X-ray rooms, and administrative offices. Under the leadership of Dr. Frank A. Moore, the clinic was staffed by 12 local physicians, all dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. This expansion laid the foundation for decades of growth, innovation, and medical excellence at The Jackson Clinic.

Prioritizing Student Health with Free School Physicals

In 1951, our physicians dedicated their time and expertise to conduct free school physical examinations, ensuring local students were healthy and ready for the classroom. This initiative demonstrated our commitment to community well-being by making preventive healthcare accessible to young students. By prioritizing children's health, we helped lay the foundation for lifelong wellness and academic success.

Advancing Medical Knowledge in Our Community

We have always believed in the power of education and collaboration to improve healthcare. In a West Tennessee medical forum, our doctors joined other medical professionals to discuss key advancements and challenges in patient care. This event, held at Jackson High School, provided an opportunity to share expertise, engage with the community, and shape the future of medicine in our region. By participating in these discussions, we reaffirm our commitment to medical excellence and lifelong learning.

Union University Nursing Program

With no local training programs, Jackson was experiencing a shortage of registered nurses. Dr. Hubbard, along with Georgia Wilson, the Director of Nursing at the General Hospital, and Dr. Francis Wright, president of Union University, established a two-year nursing program with Union University.

Union hired Isabel Neely, RN, to lead the program and the first graduates sat for the RN exam in 1964.

Expanded Our Campus for the First Time

In 1966, we completed our first physical expansion, adding a new corridor parallel to the original building. This growth also included a dedicated space for physical therapy and a basement library, extending our facility by 25 feet. This milestone began our ongoing commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare for our community.

Transformed the Hicksville Cotton Gin into Healthcare Progress

By the early 1970s, we recognized the need for more space as our clinic continued to grow. In 1973, we took a significant step by purchasing 2.2 acres of land, including the historic Hicksville Cotton Gin, for $150,000. The gin, once a thriving part of West Tennessee’s agricultural industry, was dismantled, and the land was developed into a much-needed parking lot to support our expanding patient base.

This expansion helped prevent us from becoming landlocked after previously selling a portion of our property for a nursing home. Over time, we also acquired nearby houses facing Lambuth Boulevard, further securing space for future growth. This investment ensured we could continue providing accessible, high-quality healthcare while positioning us for continued expansion in the years to come.

Added Second Story to Original Location

In 1975, we expanded our facilities by adding a second floor, increasing our clinical space by 22,000 square feet. This addition included 30 new exam rooms, a waiting area for 105 patients, and new dedicated spaces for our OB/GYN and surgery departments. At the time, we cared for around 450 patients daily with a team of 140 staff members and 27 physicians. As demand for our services continued to grow, we expanded again in 1980, adding a second story to the main "T" structure. These expansions allowed us to serve more patients efficiently while continuing to provide high-quality, physician-led care to our community.

Expanded to Serve the Alamo Community

We expanded our reach by establishing a satellite clinic in Alamo, Tennessee. After months of negotiations with local leaders, Dr. Wayne Rhear was announced as the first physician to serve the new location, providing accessible, high-quality care to Crockett County residents.

The clinic, which could accommodate up to four doctors, was a significant step toward expanding rural healthcare. The Jackson Clinic also ensured 24-hour service coverage, allowing after-hours calls to be directed to Jackson-based physicians. This milestone reinforced The Jackson Clinic’s commitment to bringing exceptional medical care closer to home.

First Convenient Care Opens

We launched Convenient Care, the region’s first after-hours clinic for acute minor emergencies. Our goal was simple—provide walk-in access to quality care for patients who might otherwise go to the ER for non-serious illnesses or injuries. What started with one part-time physician grew to three full-time providers by 1992, reinforcing our commitment to making healthcare more accessible when our patients need it most.

Opened Our Doors to Henderson

In a move to enhance patient care and accessibility, we formalized our long-standing relationship with physicians in Henderson through a cooperative agreement. This partnership allows Henderson doctors to utilize our lab, X-ray, and diagnostic services, improving communication and continuity of care. By working together, we provide stronger support, backup assistance, and recruitment opportunities for physicians in Chester County.

CareChoice Affordable Quality Healthcare

We introduced CareChoice, a cost-effective healthcare plan in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee. This initiative allowed employees and their families to access comprehensive, preventive healthcare with a wide selection of quality physicians in private offices.

Cutting-Edge Diagnostics with CT Scanning

We expanded our diagnostic capabilities by adding a state-of-the-art CT scanner to our imaging services. This technology provided clearer, more detailed images than traditional X-rays, allowing our physicians to detect issues earlier and with greater accuracy. CT scans helped reduce the need for exploratory surgery, making diagnoses faster and less invasive. By investing in this advanced equipment, we improved patient care, shortened recovery times, and enhanced treatment outcomes for our community.

New Ophthalmology & Behavioral Health Building

An additional facility was constructed on Forest Cove to house the Ophthalmology and Behavioral Health (Psychiatry/Psychology) departments.

North Campus Opens

We expanded our services with the opening of a new location in North Jackson, providing Family Practice and Dermatology care to better serve the community.

Family Practice Center Opens in Humboldt

We expanded our commitment to community healthcare by opening a family practice center in Humboldt. Led by Dr. Benny C. Houston and later joined by Dr. Keith H. Kirby, this location provided comprehensive primary care for families in the region. Equipped with a state-of-the-art medical laboratory and access to diagnostic imaging, the Humboldt Clinic ensured patients received quality care close to home. This expansion reinforced our dedication to bringing expert, multi-specialty medical services to more communities across West Tennessee.

Bringing Quality Healthcare to Camden

We marked a major milestone in Benton County healthcare with the groundbreaking of our new facility in Camden. Local officials, healthcare leaders, and community members gathered to celebrate this expansion, which strengthened our commitment to accessible, high-quality medical care. This new clinic allowed us to better serve the community and re-establish local care options.

Bringing Healthcare Closer to North Jackson

In 1996, we expanded our reach by opening a 30,000-square-foot medical facility on Walker Road to better serve the growing population in North Jackson. This new location housed nine physicians specializing in pediatrics and internal medicine, ensuring greater accessibility to quality healthcare.

With more office space, patient-friendly access, and room for future growth, this facility helped us stay ahead of Jackson’s healthcare needs while continuing to provide convenient, expert medical care to our community. The expansion also allowed us to relocate our plastic surgery department and further strengthen our commitment to delivering high-quality, physician-led care.

Bringing Healthcare Online

We took a bold step into the digital age with the launch of our first website in the late 1990s. Our site provided details on services, physician directories, locations, and appointment scheduling, helping patients navigate their care with greater convenience. This move into the digital space was a major step forward in how we connected with our community.

Trenton Clinic Opens

We continued our regional growth with the opening of a new location in Trenton on June 1, 1994, enhancing access to quality healthcare for the community.

Started Electronic Medical Records

In 1999, we transitioned to electronic medical records (EMRs), completing a decade-long project to improve efficiency and enhance patient access to health information. This technology streamlined care, reduced paperwork, and improved accuracy, allowing us to better serve our patients with faster and more coordinated healthcare.

The Jackson Clinic's 50th Anniversary!

On November 6, 2000, we celebrated 50 years of providing high-quality healthcare, marking a half-century of dedication to our patients and community.

Expanded with More Space, Advanced Equipment, and Specialist Care

To keep up with growing patient demand, we expanded our facilities again by adding 3,000 square feet at 616 Forest Ave. This $250,000 investment allowed us to bring in $1 million worth of cutting-edge medical equipment, including a mammography unit for breast cancer detection and a CT scanner for advanced diagnostics.

With this expansion, we also welcomed new specialists, including a pulmonologist, pediatrician, and oncologist, further strengthening our ability to provide comprehensive, physician-led care. As our patient volume continued to rise, this growth ensured we remained at the forefront of accessible, high-quality healthcare for our community.

Expanded Convenient Care with a Second Location

To better serve our patients, we expanded our Convenient Care services by opening a second location at 2859 U.S. 45 Bypass. This addition, located next to our Jackson Clinic North facility, provided more physicians, reduced wait times, and improved access to walk-in medical care.

With both locations staffed by a rotating team of eleven physicians, we ensured fast, efficient treatment for minor illnesses, injuries, and worker’s compensation cases—without the need for an appointment. The new facility also featured an in-house pharmacy, making it even easier for patients to get the care they needed, all in one place.

Top Honors Earned with Pinnacle Award

In 2004, The Jackson Clinic was honored with the prestigious Cornerstone Pinnacle Award, recognizing its outstanding contributions to the local business community. The award celebrates locally-owned businesses with a long-standing commitment to excellence, community involvement, and superior service. Clinic Administrator Carl Rudd accepted the award at the annual Pinnacle Gala, marking a significant achievement in The Jackson Clinic’s legacy.

Leading the Way in Population Health and Patient Care

In 2010, we took a major step toward improving patient outcomes by launching our first value-based contract, laying the foundation for our population health initiatives. This approach strengthened our efforts in preventive care, cost-effective treatment, and better health management for our patients.

By 2018, our commitment to quality care was nationally recognized when we achieved Gold Standard recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). This honor reflected our success in keeping patients among the healthiest in America, reinforcing our dedication to physician-led, patient-centered healthcare.

First Patients Seen at Medical Office Building (MOB)

In 2011, we expanded our facilities with the opening of the new Physicians Tower, providing state-of-the-art medical office space for more than 50 physicians. This 80,000-square-foot addition improved patient access and streamlined care by linking directly to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

With expanded treatment areas, new exam rooms, and enhanced specialty services—including an oncology and chemotherapy center—this growth allowed us to better serve our community. By increasing space and modernizing our facilities, we reinforced our commitment to delivering high-quality, physician-led healthcare.

In 2018 we expanded our aesthetic services with our first CoolSculpting treatment, giving patients a non-invasive option for targeted fat reduction and body contouring. This innovative technology froze and eliminated stubborn fat cells, offering a safe and effective way to achieve a sculpted look without surgery or downtime. This milestone reinforced our commitment to cutting-edge, patient-focused care.

5 Stars in Medicare Quality Plan

In recognition of our exceptional performance, we were awarded a 5-star rating by the Medicare Quality Plan in 2019, reflecting our commitment to delivering the highest standard of care.
