Mavis Hawa Koomson

This is the timeline of the member of parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency



She received her training college education at the Bimbilla Training College, setting the foundation for her future career. Her dedication to education led her to obtain a diploma and a bachelor's degree in Basic Education from the University Education, Winneba. She went on to earn a master's degree and postgraduate diplomas in public administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Career as an Educator

Koomson started her career as a teacher. Over the years, she occupied various positions in the education sector, including head teacher, assistant superintendent, and Principal superintendent. She was president of the Gender Unit of the Ghana National Association of Teachers Ladies Association (GNATLAS) in Sekondi. She also held positions as the treasurer for GNATLAS in the Western Region and as the secretary for GNATLAS in Takoradi. 

Entry into Politics

Mavis Hawa Koomson's political journey is aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). She became a member of the NPP and later represented the Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region of Ghana as the Member of Parliament.  In May 2017, she gained recognition when President Nana Akufo-Addo appointed her as part of his cabinet. This appointment placed her in a position to contribute to key decision-making activities within the government. 

2012 Election

In the 2012 election, Mavis Hawa Koomson, running under the banner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured an impressive victory with 52.50% of the votes. This win marked her first term as the Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

2016 Election

Four years later, in the 2016 election, Mavis Hawa Koomson secured an even larger margin of victory with 58.10% of the votes. The election results reaffirmed her position as the Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

2020 Election

In the 2020 Ghanaian general elections, Mavis Hawa Koomson secured victory in the Awutu Senya East Constituency parliamentary seat with 57,114 votes, making up 52.6% of the total votes cast.

Ministerial Role

Notably, she was given the responsibility of being the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development on March 2021.
