Yaw Osei Adutwum

Yaw Osei Adutwum is a Ghanaian politician and member of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, representing the Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

Career

In September 2004, Adutwum founded New Designs Charter Schools in California, USA. Prior to this, he taught Mathematics and Information Technology at Manual Arts High School for ten years, during which he established the International Studies Academy, a small learning community for students. He also served as the lead math teacher in the USC/Manual Arts Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI) and participated in a task force by the National Research Council for Career and Technical Education to develop a national model for career and technical education.

Before

Political Career

Adutwum is a member of the New Patriotic Party, representing the Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti Region in the Seventh and Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. Appointed as Deputy Education Minister in March 2017 by President Nana Akufo-Addo, Adutwum served in this role for four years before being promoted to Minister of Education on January 21, 2021.

Initiatives and Contributions

Under Adutwum's leadership, a plan to construct 35 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Senior High Schools and 5 STEM universities throughout Ghana was initiated, with 10 STEM SHSs starting in 2022. This initiative aims to promote STEM education and provide specialized learning opportunities.

Legacy

Despite the various roles and responsibilities, Dr. Adutwum is particularly noted for his unannounced teaching visits to schools, reflecting his enduring commitment to education even beyond active teaching service. His efforts continue to make significant impacts on Ghana's educational landscape, advocating for policy reforms, promoting STEM education, and supporting students' academic pursuits.
