Ghana Railway Company Limited

Ghana Railway Company Limited, previously known as the Ghana Railway Corporation, is the primary operator of Ghana's railway network. As a public-sector entity, its core mission lies in efficiently managing the national rail system to facilitate the seamless movement of goods and passengers.

Eastern Railway

The original Eastern Railway, spanning 304 kilometers, was constructed in 1923 by the British to transport minerals and cocoa. Challenges arose during construction, including the lack of port facilities, necessitating the lightering of locomotives and equipment over the beach.

ECOWAS rail plan

In July 2007, Ghana signed contracts as part of the ECOWAS rail plan, aiming to establish connections with Burkina Faso. Subsequent studies in February explored new line proposals and gauged conversion possibilities.

Tema Harbour expnsion

These units, equipped with Vossloh Kiepe and Voith traction equipment, were launched in October 2010, coinciding with the commissioning of the line and the commencement of an extension project to Tema Harbour. Further expansion initiatives unfolded in 2010 with contracts signed for the construction of a railway from Paga to Kumasi, along with a branch line from Tamale to Yendi.
