Samuel Kwesi Oppong

Samuel Kwesi Oppong popularly known in the theatre industry and among fans as S.K. Oppong was a celebrated Ghanaian actor, musician, and storyteller who left an indelible mark on the arts.

Rise to Fame with Osofo Dadzie

Oppong’s transition to television came with the group's first TV appearance in the play Aku Sika on GBC's popular show Anansekrom (Ananse Town) in 1972. Written by Nana Kwame Ampadu, the play was a hit, and the group quickly gained a following. The S.K. Oppong Guitar Band also participated in Jatokrom, a GTV Concert Party production managed by Nana Bosompra II.

Passing and Legacy

S.K. Oppong passed away at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on December 3, 2001, after a prolonged illness, at the age of 55. He was remembered by Ghana's Minister of Information and Presidential Affairs, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, as "a role model who educated Ghanaians through the arts." Thousands, including his colleagues from Osofo Dadzie and fans, paid their respects at his funeral on February 1, 2002, before he was laid to rest at the Osu Cemetery.
