Okyeame Kwame

Kwame Nsiah-Apau, famously known by his stage name Okyeame Kwame and affectionately called the Rap Doctor is a celebrated Ghanaian musician, songwriter, creative director, and developmental activist.

Music Career

Okyeame Kwame's musical journey began in 1997 as part of the hiplife duo "Akyeame," alongside Daniel Kofi Amoateng (Okyeame Kofi). The duo released several successful albums before parting ways in 2004, after which Kwame launched his solo career under his record label, One Mic Entertainment, now known as OK Music. He has collaborated with notable Ghanaian artists such as Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi, and Ofori Amponsah.

Significant Music Events

In 2012, Kwame introduced "The Versatile Show," a biannual theatrical production combining poetry, drama, and music. He also launched the "Flaunt Your Lover" event with his wife in 2016, promoting love and togetherness among couples. Since 2019, he has been organizing the annual Hiplife Party, aimed at preserving the hiplife heritage.

Style and Versatility

Okyeame Kwame’s music predominantly features the Twi dialect of the Akan language, though he is known for his versatility in performing genres like hip-hop, reggae, highlife, R&B, and jazz. His stage name, "Okyeame," meaning "linguist" in Akan, reflects his lyrical prowess and fluidity.

Business Ventures and Philanthropy

Beyond music, Kwame is a successful entrepreneur, running OK Music and co-founding the now-defunct Firm Bridges Communications with his wife. He is a partner in Horseman Shoes and Sante’s Hair for Kids, with his daughter serving as the brand ambassador.

His philanthropic efforts are notable, especially through the Okyeame Kwame Foundation, which focuses on hepatitis B awareness, screening, and vaccination. The foundation has reached thousands across Ghana, providing free vaccinations and health education.

Controversies

Despite his positive influence, Kwame has faced controversies, such as his legal battle with highlife legend Gyedu-Blay Ambolley and his public adoption of a vegan lifestyle, which drew mixed reactions. His stance on self-responsibility during the OccupyJulorbihouse protest also sparked debate, as did the promotional images for his boxer pant label, "Love Equation," which some criticized as indecent.
